Strength exercise

Behind the Neck Press

How to do it

  1. Stand or sit with feet shoulder width apart and grip a bar wider than shoulder width, resting it across the upper back of the shoulders.
  2. Brace the core and keep the chin level, avoiding excessive forward head lean as the bar sits behind the neck.
  3. Press the bar straight overhead, keeping the path close to the body as the arms extend.
  4. Lock the arms out fully overhead with the biceps near the ears at the top.
  5. Lower the bar back down behind the neck to shoulder level under slow control.
  6. Keep the elbows tracking under the wrists throughout to maintain a stable bar path.
