Strength exercise

Barbell Shoulder Press

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet shoulder width apart and grip the barbell slightly wider than shoulder width at the front of the shoulders.
  2. Brace the core and glutes to keep the ribs stacked over the hips before pressing.
  3. Press the bar straight overhead, tucking the head slightly back to let the bar pass close to the face.
  4. Extend through the shoulders and triceps until the arms lock out directly above the head.
  5. Keep the torso rigid as the bar passes overhead rather than arching the lower back.
  6. Lower the bar back to the front of the shoulders under control for each repetition.
