Strength exercise

Barbell Yates Row

How to do it

  1. Stand over a loaded barbell and grip it with an underhand, shoulder width grip.
  2. Hinge at the hips to a more upright angle than a standard bent over row, roughly 45 degrees from vertical, keeping a flat back.
  3. Brace your core and let the bar hang at arm's length below your hips to start each rep.
  4. Row the bar up toward your waist, driving your elbows back and squeezing the latissimus dorsi and biceps at the top.
  5. Exhale through the pull, hold briefly, then lower the bar under control back to the starting hang.
  6. Keep the more upright torso angle steady throughout the set; avoid swinging the torso to generate momentum.
