Barbell Upright Row

How to do it

  1. Stand tall holding a barbell loaded with weight plates using an overhand grip, your hands about shoulder width apart and your arms hanging in front of your thighs.
  2. Set your feet hip width apart and brace your core to keep your torso upright throughout the movement.
  3. Pull the bar straight up along your body by leading with your elbows, driving the lift through your trapezius and side deltoids.
  4. Raise the bar to about chest height and feel the traps and side delts squeeze at the top while the biceps assist the bend at your elbows.
  5. Exhale as you pull, pause briefly, then lower the bar back to the starting position under control.
  6. Keep the bar path vertical and close to your body, avoiding shrugging excessively or raising your elbows above shoulder height.
