Strength exercise

Barbell Triceps Extension

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, gripping the barbell with an overhand grip at shoulder-width and arms extended straight overhead to start.
  2. Keep the upper arms stationary and close to the head as you bend the elbows to lower the bar behind the head.
  3. Extend the elbows to press the bar back to the starting position overhead, isolating the triceps brachii through the full range.
  4. Brace the core to keep the ribs down and prevent the lower back from arching as the weight lowers.
  5. Inhale on the way down, exhale as you press the bar back up.
  6. Common fault: avoid letting the elbows drift outward or the lower back arch to help drive the bar up.
