Strength exercise
Smith Machine Decline Bench Press
How to do it
- Set a decline bench under the Smith machine bar and secure the legs under the pads before lying back.
- Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width and unrack it over the lower chest.
- Lower the bar with control to the lower chest line, letting the decline angle shift the emphasis down the chest.
- Press the bar back up along the fixed vertical path, driving through the chest and triceps.
- Exhale on the press and inhale on the descent, keeping the head and shoulders pressed into the bench.
- Keep the movement slow and controlled off the chest; a common fault on the decline angle is dropping the bar too quickly given the shorter range of motion.
