Strength exercise

Smith Machine Bench Press

How to do it

  1. Set a flat bench under the Smith machine bar and lie back with the bar aligned over the mid chest.
  2. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width and rotate to unrack it from the hooks.
  3. Lower the bar with control to the mid chest, keeping the elbows at roughly a 45 degree angle from the torso.
  4. Press the bar back up along the fixed vertical path, driving through the chest and triceps.
  5. Exhale on the press and inhale on the descent, keeping the feet flat on the floor throughout.
  6. Keep the wrists stacked over the bar; a common fault is letting the bar drift toward the neck instead of the mid chest.
