Strength exercise

Seated Dumbbell Press

How to do it

  1. Sit on an upright bench with a dumbbell in each hand resting at shoulder height, palms facing forward.
  2. Plant the feet flat on the floor and press the shoulder blades into the backrest for a stable base.
  3. Press both dumbbells straight overhead until the arms are fully extended without locking the elbows harshly.
  4. Lower the dumbbells with control back to shoulder height, keeping the shoulders and triceps under tension.
  5. Exhale on the press up and inhale on the way down, keeping the pace even.
  6. Avoid arching the lower back to complete the lockout; a common fault is leaning back instead of finishing the press with the shoulders.
