Strength exercise

Sandbag Push Press

How to do it

  1. Hold a sandbag across the front of the shoulders with feet about hip width apart and knees soft.
  2. Brace the core and dip the knees and hips a few inches in a short, controlled quarter squat.
  3. Drive up explosively through the legs and use that momentum to press the bag overhead, finishing with the shoulders and triceps locking out the arms.
  4. Catch the bag overhead with the arms fully extended and the ribcage stacked over the hips.
  5. Lower the bag back to the shoulders under control before the next dip, exhaling on the drive and press.
  6. Keep the dip short and vertical; a common fault is turning the dip into a full squat instead of a quick leg drive.
