Strength exercise

Kettlebell Sumo Squat

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet wider than shoulder width, toes turned outward about 30 degrees, holding a kettlebell by both horns close to the chest.
  2. Brace the core and pull the shoulder blades down and together before starting the descent.
  3. Sit the hips down and back between the knees, tracking the knees out over the toes as the quadriceps and glutes lengthen under load.
  4. Lower until the thighs are roughly parallel to the floor or as deep as hip mobility allows without the lower back rounding.
  5. Drive through the whole foot to stand, squeezing the glutes at the top while exhaling on the way up.
  6. Keep the kettlebell close to the torso throughout; avoid letting it drift away from the body, which pulls the chest forward.
