Strength exercise

Atlas Stone Load

How to do it

  1. Straddle the atlas stone, squat down, and wrap both arms underneath it against your torso.
  2. Brace the core and drive through the quadriceps to lift the stone up onto your thighs as with a standard lift.
  3. Extend the hips explosively, using the gluteus maximus to pop the stone higher up your torso.
  4. Use the thighs as a shelf to reposition your grip underneath the stone before the final push.
  5. Drive the stone upward and forward with the arms and legs together to load it onto the target platform or over the bar.
  6. Keep the core braced and the back rounded only slightly as the stone clears the platform, guiding it down softly.
