Strength exercise

Clapping Pull-up

How to do it

  1. Grip the bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder width and hang with arms fully extended.
  2. Brace the core and pull explosively, driving the elbows down and back as fast as possible.
  3. Pull hard enough that your chest rises above the bar and your hands leave it briefly at the top of the rep.
  4. Clap your hands together quickly, then reach back out and regrip the bar before you descend.
  5. Exhale sharply on the explosive pull, then inhale as you lower back to a full hang under control.
  6. Land the regrip with soft, slightly bent elbows rather than locking out straight, since a rigid regrip is harder to catch cleanly.
