Strength exercise

Chain Squat

How to do it

  1. Drape a set of chains over each end of a loaded barbell so extra links stack on the floor at the bottom of the lift.
  2. Position the bar across your upper back in a low or high bar position and unrack it with feet shoulder width apart.
  3. Bend your knees and push your hips back to descend into the squat, noting the chains pile onto the floor and lighten the load near the bottom.
  4. Lower until your thighs are near parallel, keeping your knees tracking over your toes through the reduced bottom range resistance.
  5. Drive through your heels to stand, exhaling as the chains lift off the floor and add resistance through your quadriceps and glutes near lockout.
  6. Avoid speeding through the top portion, and control the rep even as the chain weight increases.
