Barbell Wide Grip Bench Press

How to do it

  1. Lie on a flat bench and grip the barbell wider than shoulder width, near the outer rings of the bar.
  2. Unrack the bar and hold it steady over the chest with the wrists stacked above the forearms.
  3. Lower the bar to the mid chest, letting the elbows flare wider than in a close grip variation.
  4. Press the bar back up by driving through the chest first, finishing the lockout with the triceps and forearms.
  5. Keep the feet planted and the shoulder blades pulled together against the bench throughout.
  6. Use a slightly slower descent on this wide grip variation to keep tension on the chest before pressing back up.
