Strength exercise
Smith Machine Close Grip Bench Press
How to do it
- Lie on a flat bench under the Smith machine bar and grip it with hands just inside shoulder width.
- Unrack the bar and hold it directly over the chest with the wrists locked and forearms vertical.
- Lower the bar with control to the lower chest, keeping the elbows tracking close to the torso rather than flaring out.
- Press the bar back up along the fixed path, emphasizing the triceps and forearm flexors that stabilize the narrow grip.
- Exhale through the press and inhale on the way down, keeping the tempo controlled.
- Keep the elbows tucked throughout the rep; a common fault is letting them drift outward, which shifts the close grip emphasis away from the triceps.
