Strength exercise
Barbell Step-up
How to do it
- Stand facing a sturdy box or bench with a barbell resting across the upper back, gripping it wider than shoulder-width.
- Place one foot fully on the box, keeping the torso upright.
- Brace the core before shifting weight forward onto the lead leg.
- Drive through the planted foot's quadriceps to step up onto the box, extending the hip and knee until standing tall.
- Exhale while stepping up and inhale during the controlled step down with the trailing leg.
- Avoid pushing off the trailing foot to assist the lift instead of driving through the lead leg.
