Strength exercise

Barbell Split Squat

How to do it

  1. Rest a barbell across your upper back and step into a split stance with one foot forward and one foot back, hips facing forward.
  2. Brace your core and keep your weight balanced between both feet before you begin the descent.
  3. Bend both knees and lower your back knee straight down toward the floor while your front knee tracks over your front foot.
  4. Descend until your back knee hovers just above the floor, feeling the load through your front leg's quadriceps and glutes.
  5. Drive through your front heel to stand back up, exhaling as you extend your front hip and knee.
  6. Avoid letting your front knee drift past your toes or your torso lean too far forward during the descent.
