Strength exercise

Barbell Lateral Raise

How to do it

  1. Load a barbell with light plates and hold it with a wide overhand grip in front of the thighs.
  2. Set the feet shoulder width apart with a soft bend in the knees and a slight forward lean.
  3. Keep a slight bend in the elbows and raise the bar out and up in an arc away from the body.
  4. Stop once the bar reaches roughly shoulder height, letting the shoulders and lateral deltoids drive the lift.
  5. Lower the bar slowly back to the thighs, resisting the plates the entire way down.
  6. Keep the wrists neutral and avoid using the hips to heave the bar upward.
