Strength exercise

Smith Machine Romanian Deadlift

How to do it

  1. Set the bar on a Smith machine at hip height and stand facing it with feet hip width apart, gripping the bar at shoulder width.
  2. Unrack the bar and keep a slight, fixed bend in the knees throughout.
  3. Brace the core and set the shoulders back before hinging at the hips.
  4. Push the hips straight back along the fixed vertical bar path, lowering the bar along the thighs and shins as the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings (biceps femoris) stretch until tension is felt.
  5. Inhale during the hinge back, exhale driving the hips forward to reverse along the guided track.
  6. Avoid pushing the hips forward too early since the fixed bar path will not correct a mistimed hinge; keep the movement originating at the hips.
