Strength exercise

Sandbag Press (Overhead)

How to do it

  1. Clean a sandbag to the shoulders and stand with feet hip width apart, bag resting across the front of the shoulders.
  2. Brace the core and squeeze the sandbag against the chest to control its shifting weight.
  3. Press the bag straight overhead to full arm extension, keeping the ribcage down and avoiding an excessive lower back arch.
  4. Lower the bag back to the shoulders under control, absorbing the load with the shoulders and core together.
  5. Exhale on the press up and inhale as the bag returns to the shoulders.
  6. Keep the press path directly overhead; a common fault is pressing the bag forward instead of straight up as the unstable load shifts.
