Strength exercise

Safety Bar Squat

How to do it

  1. Unrack a safety squat bar so the padded yoke rests across the upper traps and the handles are gripped in front.
  2. Set the feet shoulder width apart, brace the core, and keep the elbows down rather than flaring them out to the sides.
  3. Descend by sitting the hips back and down, letting the forward-shifted camber of the bar test balance through the torso.
  4. Lower until the thighs reach parallel, feeling the load through the quadriceps and glutes.
  5. Drive through the whole foot to stand, keeping the chest tall against the bar's tendency to pull the torso forward.
  6. Exhale near the top and re-rack the bar under the pins or hooks once the working set is complete.
