Strength exercise
Pull-up (Wide Grip)
How to do it
- Grip the bar with hands well outside shoulder width, palms facing away from you, and hang with arms fully extended.
- Brace the core and set the shoulder blades down before initiating the pull.
- Pull your chest toward the bar, driving the elbows out and down in a wider arc than a standard grip.
- Feel the lats take on more of the pulling load with this wider hand placement, while the forearms work to maintain the grip.
- Exhale as your chin clears the bar, then inhale as you lower back to a full hang.
- Avoid shortening the range by stopping short of full arm extension at the bottom, which keeps the wide-grip stretch consistent.
