Strength exercise

Paused Romanian Deadlift

How to do it

  1. Load a barbell and stand with feet hip width apart, gripping the bar at shoulder width just outside the thighs.
  2. Keep a slight, fixed bend in the knees and the bar close against the thighs.
  3. Brace the core and set the shoulder blades back before hinging.
  4. Push the hips back and lower the bar along the thighs and shins until a stretch is felt, pause for a full count at the bottom before driving the hips forward, working the hamstrings (biceps femoris) and back through the extended hold.
  5. Inhale during the descent, hold the breath through the pause, then exhale driving back to standing.
  6. Avoid rounding the lower back to sink deeper during the pause; stop at the point where a flat back can be held.
