Strength exercise

Barbell Romanian Deadlift

How to do it

  1. Load a barbell with weight plates and stand with feet hip width apart, gripping the bar just outside the thighs.
  2. Set the grip at shoulder width and keep a slight, fixed bend in the knees.
  3. Brace the core and pull the shoulder blades together before unlocking the hips.
  4. Push the hips back while lowering the bar close along the thighs and shins, keeping the back flat as the hamstrings (biceps femoris) and back stretch until tension is felt behind the thighs.
  5. Inhale as the hips travel back, exhale driving the hips forward to reverse the bar to the starting position.
  6. Avoid rounding the upper back as the bar passes the knees; keep the chest up and the bar tracking close to the legs.
