Strength exercise
Hyperextension Machine
How to do it
- Position the hips against the pad of the hyperextension bench set at 45 degrees, tucking the ankles under the rear rollers.
- Cross the arms over the chest, starting with the torso folded forward at the hips toward the floor.
- Raise the torso by extending through the hips until the body forms a straight line, feeling the effort in the lower back and glutes.
- Pause briefly at the top with a glute squeeze, keeping the spine neutral rather than arching past straight.
- Lower back down under control, inhaling on the descent and exhaling as you rise.
- Common fault: avoid rounding the lower back at the bottom or rising with a fast, jerky motion.
