Flexibility exercise

Downward Dog

How to do it

  1. Start on hands and knees, then tuck the toes and lift the hips up and back to form an inverted V with the body.
  2. Press the floor away through both hands and reach the heels toward the floor, straightening the arms and legs as much as is comfortable.
  3. Lengthen the spine and let the head hang relaxed between the arms, feeling a stretch through the shoulders, hamstrings, and calves at the same time.
  4. Breathe fully and evenly, exhaling as you settle a little deeper into the shape.
  5. Hold the position for 5 to 8 slow breaths before lowering the knees back to the floor.
  6. Keep the spine long rather than rounding the upper back to force the heels down, which is the most common fault in this pose.
