Flexibility exercise

Calf Stretch (Downward Dog)

How to do it

  1. Start on hands and knees, then lift the hips up and back into an inverted V shape with hands and feet pressing into the floor.
  2. Straighten one leg fully while bending the other knee slightly, pressing the heel of the straight leg toward the floor.
  3. Pedal the heels one at a time, alternating which heel drives down, to feel the stretch shift through each calf in turn.
  4. Breathe evenly through the position, exhaling as each heel presses down.
  5. Continue pedaling for 20 to 30 seconds, spending roughly equal time favoring each side.
  6. Keep the spine long rather than rounding through the upper back to force the heel down, which is the most common fault.
