Strength exercise
Barbell Overhead Press
How to do it
- Stand with feet hip width apart, gripping the bar just outside shoulder width with it resting on the front deltoids.
- Brace the core and squeeze the glutes to keep the ribcage stacked over the pelvis before pressing.
- Press the bar straight overhead, driving through the shoulders while shifting the head back slightly to clear the bar path.
- Lock the elbows fully at the top and shrug the shoulders up to finish the movement.
- Lower the bar back to the front deltoids over about 2 seconds, keeping the elbows tracking under the wrists.
- Exhale forcefully as the bar passes the forehead and keep the lower back from arching to gain extra height.
