Strength exercise

Barbell Overhead Press

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet hip width apart, gripping the bar just outside shoulder width with it resting on the front deltoids.
  2. Brace the core and squeeze the glutes to keep the ribcage stacked over the pelvis before pressing.
  3. Press the bar straight overhead, driving through the shoulders while shifting the head back slightly to clear the bar path.
  4. Lock the elbows fully at the top and shrug the shoulders up to finish the movement.
  5. Lower the bar back to the front deltoids over about 2 seconds, keeping the elbows tracking under the wrists.
  6. Exhale forcefully as the bar passes the forehead and keep the lower back from arching to gain extra height.
