Strength exercise
Smith Machine Incline Bench Press
How to do it
- Set an incline bench to roughly 30 to 45 degrees under the Smith machine bar and lie back with the bar over the upper chest.
- Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width and unrack it to arms extended.
- Lower the bar with control to the upper chest, keeping the elbows at about a 45 degree angle from the torso.
- Press the bar back up along the fixed path, driving through the upper chest, anterior deltoid, and triceps.
- Exhale on the press and inhale on the descent, keeping the shoulder blades pinned to the bench.
- Keep the bench angle moderate; a common fault is setting the incline too steep, which shifts the work away from the chest and onto the shoulders.
