Strength exercise

Shoulder Press Machine (Standing)

How to do it

  1. Stand facing the shoulder press machine and set the handles level with the top of the shoulders.
  2. Grip the handles with hands slightly wider than shoulder width and plant the feet firmly under the hips.
  3. Brace the core and press the handles straight overhead until the arms are extended.
  4. Lower the handles back to the start position under control, feeling the shoulders drive the movement.
  5. Exhale as you press up and inhale as you return to the start.
  6. Keep the torso upright throughout the standing press; a common fault is leaning back to use momentum instead of the shoulders.
