Strength exercise
Lateral Raise
How to do it
- Stand tall with feet shoulder width apart, holding a light dumbbell in each hand, or a low cable handle in each hand, at the sides with palms facing in.
- Brace the core, keep the knees locked straight, and hold a slight, fixed bend in the elbows.
- Raise the weight out to the sides by driving through the shoulders, leading with the elbows rather than the hands.
- Lift until the arms reach shoulder height and stop, without letting the torso lean or sway to help the weight up.
- Lower back down under control over about 2 seconds to the starting position.
- Exhale on the lift and keep the hips and shoulders square throughout every repetition.
