Strength exercise

Peterson Step-up

How to do it

  1. Stand facing a bench or box at a height that puts the working knee near a right angle when the foot is planted on top.
  2. Place the working foot fully on the box and press down through the whole foot to drive the body upward.
  3. Straighten the working leg at the top and drive the opposite knee up in front of the hip for a brief pause.
  4. Let the quadriceps of the working leg control most of the drive rather than pushing off the trailing foot.
  5. Lower back down slowly, tapping the trailing heel lightly to the floor without resting the weight on it.
  6. Complete all reps on one leg before switching the working leg to the opposite side.
