Strength exercise
Dumbbell Step-up
How to do it
- Stand facing an elevated platform holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet hip-width apart.
- Place one foot fully on top of the platform, keeping the shin roughly vertical over the laces.
- Drive through the planted foot to step up onto the platform, letting the quadriceps do the work rather than pushing off the trailing leg.
- Lower back down under control to the starting position and repeat, alternating the leading leg as prescribed.
- Exhale as you step up and inhale as you lower back down.
- A common fault is pushing off the trailing leg for momentum, keep the drive concentrated through the leading leg on the platform.
