Strength exercise

Dumbbell Step-up

How to do it

  1. Stand facing an elevated platform holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet hip-width apart.
  2. Place one foot fully on top of the platform, keeping the shin roughly vertical over the laces.
  3. Drive through the planted foot to step up onto the platform, letting the quadriceps do the work rather than pushing off the trailing leg.
  4. Lower back down under control to the starting position and repeat, alternating the leading leg as prescribed.
  5. Exhale as you step up and inhale as you lower back down.
  6. A common fault is pushing off the trailing leg for momentum, keep the drive concentrated through the leading leg on the platform.
