Setting a protein target you can actually track

"Eat more protein" is easy advice and a useless number. It doesn't tell you how much more, and it doesn't tell you what to do with that number once you have it. A protein target only earns its keep if it's specific enough to hit and simple enough to check without turning every meal into a spreadsheet.

Picking a number that isn't a guess

The government minimum for protein (around 0.8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight) is calibrated to prevent deficiency in a sedentary adult, not to support someone lifting weights or running mileage. Sports nutrition guidance for people training for muscle or strength commonly lands in a wider band, roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day. Where you sit in that range depends on how hard you train, how much muscle you're carrying, and whether you're cutting calories (protein needs trend higher on a cut, partly to help hang onto muscle while calories are down).

None of that means picking a target has to be complicated. A lifter around 80 kg training seriously has a reasonable starting point somewhere between 130 and 175 grams a day. Round it, pick a number inside that band, and treat it as a starting point you'll adjust once you see a few weeks of real data against it, not a figure to defend to the gram.

The number only works if it's attached to a real number of calories

A protein target that floats on its own, disconnected from total calories, tends to drift. Hit a high-protein day on top of a high-calorie day and the two numbers stop telling you anything separately, since protein carries calories too (4 per gram, same as carbs). Where the number actually lives day to day

A target sitting in a settings screen doesn't do anything by itself. What makes it useful is a daily view that shows consumed grams next to the target in a way you can read in the two seconds between sets, not a food diary you review at the end of the week. If a target consistently gets missed by a wide margin, the number itself might be wrong for how you actually eat, worth lowering ten or fifteen grams rather than scrapping the whole idea of tracking it. If it's consistently hit with room to spare, that's useful information too, room to nudge it up on a bulk or hold steady on a cut. Either way, the fix is a small edit to one number, not a decision to stop measuring.

The goal isn't hitting an exact figure every single day. Protein intake that lands within a reasonable range of the target most days, tracked consistently enough to actually see the pattern, does more for a training goal than a number that's precise on paper and ignored in practice. Pick a target inside a sane range for your bodyweight and training, tie it to a real calorie number instead of letting it float, and put it somewhere you'll actually see it while you're eating instead of a place you check once a week. That's the difference between a protein goal and a protein guess.
