Thirty seconds. Ninety seconds. Three minutes. Ask five lifters how long to rest between sets and you get five different numbers, usually stated as if it were a universal constant. It isn't. The right rest period depends on what the set was for, heavy singles and a set of twenty are not resting for the same reason, and the honest range is wider and looser than most quick answers suggest.
What the rest period is actually doing
Rest between sets exists to let two things recover before the next set starts: the muscle's ability to produce force, and the nervous system's ability to drive that force at a high output. Both recover on a curve, fast at first and slower after that, which is why "rest until you feel ready" and "rest a fixed number of seconds" often land in a similar place for anyone paying attention to their own effort. The clock is a proxy for recovery, not the thing that actually matters.
Heavier work wants more time
A set close to your working max, low reps, high load, taxes the nervous system hard and needs more of that recovery curve to play out before the next set can be run at a similar output. This is why strength-focused work commonly gets recommended rest in the two to three minute range and sometimes longer for the heaviest singles and doubles: cutting it short mostly shows up as the next set feeling noticeably harder for the same weight, more grinding, slower bar speed, an RPE that reads higher than the last set even though nothing on the bar changed.
There's no hard cutoff where "too short" starts. It's a fatigue tax that increases the shorter the rest gets, and a lifter chasing a true strength adaptation is usually better served erring long than short, especially on the main compound lift of the day.
Hypertrophy work has more room to compress
For sets in a moderate rep range done with the goal of growth rather than a pure strength test, the picture is looser. Research on this specific question has landed on a modest, not dramatic, difference: resting somewhere from about one to two minutes tends to support hypertrophy about as well as resting longer, with the biggest gap showing up only when rest drops well under a minute. That's a wide window, and it means the instinct to fill every set with the shortest possible rest to "keep the burn going" is chasing a smaller effect than it sounds like it should produce.
The practical read: on an isolation exercise or the last exercise of a session, a shorter rest is a reasonable choice and probably costs you very little. On a compound lift you're also trying to add weight or reps to over time, giving it the longer end of that range protects the progressive overload that's actually driving the adaptation, since a set performed worse because recovery was cut short isn't overload, it's just a harder set for no extra benefit.
Supersets remove the question by design
Supersets and back-to-back alternating exercises sidestep this entirely, by design they're built to be run in succession with no rest between the paired exercises, using a different muscle group or movement pattern so one exercise's fatigue doesn't directly blunt the next. That's a different tool solving a different problem: time efficiency and a training effect from the pairing, not a rest-interval optimization. Reading it off your own effort instead of a clock

The more useful signal is how the next set actually goes: if reps, weight, or bar speed drop off noticeably from the set before it with nothing else changed, that's a sign the rest was too short for what that set was asking of you. Logging RPE on every set, rather than just weight and reps, is what makes that pattern visible instead of a vague feeling you forget about by the next session. If a lift's RPE keeps creeping up set to set at a fixed weight, rest is one of the first things worth checking before assuming the weight itself is the problem. RPE turns "that felt harder" into a number you can actually compare across a session and across weeks.

Rest longer, two to three minutes or more, for heavy strength-focused sets where nervous system recovery is the limiting factor. Rest shorter, roughly one to two minutes, for hypertrophy-focused sets, the difference between that and resting longer is smaller than most advice implies.
